Change Mindset vs. Winning Mindset

We often hear leaders discuss what it takes to develop a winning mindset. To them, leading means winning. Winning at what exactly? Winning at work or winning at life? Motivational speakers worldwide talk about what it takes to win, but few discuss what it takes to change. If you think about it, to win in business, life, sports, or anything else, you must be highly adaptable or flexible. One might even say agile. In other words, you must be willing to change.

The winning mindset is a powerful tool that empowers you to set goals, be accountable, and make clear decisions. It’s about reframing your thinking to identify the win in every situation. The change mindset, on the other hand, emphasizes the importance of being intentional about the new behavior you want to instill in your mind and focusing on achieving that goal over time.

Here are a few tips on winning and changing mindsets.

Winning Mindset

 1. Develop a plan with long- and short-term goals for what, how, and why you are trying to achieve your goals. This will give you a clear sense of direction and purpose in your journey towards success.

 2. Develop a daily to-do list. Once you begin to see progress, you will be motivated to stay the course.

 3. Create alternative plans in case life begins to life and you need to change course. If you plan for the unexpected, you will not be shaken by challenges when they arise. This adaptability will make you more resilient and prepared for any change that comes your way.

Change Mindset

 1. Focus on the mindset or change you want to make to remove your attention from old habits.

 2. Understand that organizational change begins with individual change. As a leader, you must recognize and acknowledge that each person has their own beliefs, values, and habits.

 3. Gather evidence to help others understand the intended shifts. Evidence can include data, success stories, and lessons learned.

These tips seem connected, don’t they? Honestly, it’s not either/or; it’s yes/and. Both require work, but one is focused on the individual, and the other is more likely to have a positive impact on an entire organization. It’s all about perspective.
